Magic! Prophecies! Cultists! Demons! ...and Oliver?
Oliver Kirkle had a normal life until prophecies got in the way.
A multitude of cults, each with its own interpretation of the prophecies, think Oliver is their messiah. Unfortunately for Oliver, that's the only thing they agree about.
The Reluctant Messiah is a darkly comedic tale about a clueless supposed messiah.
˃˃˃ First Book of the Prophecies Triptych series
>>>After The Reluctant Messiah, the story continues in An Unexpected Apocalypse, and concludes in False Messiah.

This is a lot of fun in a Good Omens kind of way. It approximates a style that I normally associate with English authors, and I kept hearing all of the characters' voices with English accents and having to remind myself that this does not take place in London but in some random smallish North American city (I've learned that the author is Canadian).I especially loved... well, quite a bit of it! The opening scene with teenage Bernard discovering the cult and the revelation of his real name, the demon summoning on top of Mount Everest, Oliver's reaction to a big reveal about his wife, Bunny. It's all pretty hilarious and great.
Written in third person with alternating POV's in different chapters, I do wish that the fourth of the 4 POV's that we see could have been introduced a little bit sooner, as the other 3 are all male, but apart from the fact that it would have helped us get to know that woman better, this is a quibble. I highly enjoyed the wit and self-awareness of this book as well as its overall structure, apart from the ending, which felt just a little off somehow regardless of whether the book is a standalone or the first in a trilogy (I think it can be read either way).

The Reluctant Messiah The Prophecies Triptych Book 1 edition by Eric Guindon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A fun story about a boy, a demon and his fate. Lots of humor and good writing. Looking forward to the next one. Very much recommend. )
When I saw the title I had hopes that this book would be entertaining in a humorous way. To my joy it definitely is! Oh it has occult and Magik to entice us, but it definitely has laughs! Some parts are so quirky that I want to copy them and email to friends to get their interest. Guess I just send them the book (s).
I had read about how funny it was and so forth and I really like the Wizards life series so I gave it a try. Not my thing
For amateurs of modern fiction, this novel will keep you guessing until the end. You can really relate to the characters in the the story and I believe that makes it easy to believe in the story. The writing style reminds me of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, therefore fans of either would do well to read this book in my opinion. In a world where everything seems normal, underlying weirdness and magic give contrast to the stark reality of life.
Can't wait for the next one!
This is a great new author with my kind of sense of humor!
Reminescent of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, this is a great first book.
I will enjoy reading as this author refines his style -and I NEED to know where this story goes!
Definitely worth a read )
I've been reading the digital version but have just ordered a paper copy to have on my shelf and be able to pass out to friends looking for a good read. The Reluctant Messiah is engaging, fun, dark and, at times, hilarious. Guindon's sense of humor shines through his characters and the story is well thought out and fun to follow. Other reviewers have listed Terry Pratchet as an influence, there is no doubt that fans of Neil Gaiman would love this book too.
The Reluctant Messiah was a delightful change of pace for me to read. The concept of the story was quite original as well.
I found the characters to be unlikely candidates for the task they faced which is what made the story seem so real. The tale was well thought out and a fun read.
I hope to see more from this author in the future and I highly recommend this book to one and all.
